Post news editor Mairi MacDonald outlines this week’s major general insurance stories including how RSA has become embroiled in a legal spat with Provident over subrogated motor repair costs.

The issue has already been described as the new credit hire.

In other news, legal expenses insurers Lamp and Financial & Legal have criticised the ABI for backing plans outlined in the Ministry of Justice consultation to abolish the recoverability of after-the-event insurance premiums; insurer partners of Auto Windscreens have admitted they are moving their business to rival providers after the firm was placed in administration; Zurich's UK general insurance boss Stephen Lewis has attributed its 11% year-on-year fall in top line premium and bottom line profit in 2010 to underperformance within the personal lines market; and finally, investment in flood defences needs to be ongoing or the UK could face a situation as devastating as the recent flooding in Australia, Mary Dhonau, the former chief executive of the National Flood Forum, has warned.
