Your say: Investing in fraud specialists

fraud-clippings

The latest fraud results announced by the Association of British Insurers demonstrate once again that fraud is a risk that our industry cannot ignore as unchecked it will eradicate any marginal bottom lines in what continues to be a tough market for most.

I am also concerned that behind the figures stated by the ABI, the number of detected frauds in 2013 fell indicating that in-house teams have not been equipped with the necessary skills.

At Questgates we have certainly seen a marked interest over recent months among our existing and new clients in up-skilling staff through a professional qualification underpinned by the Counter Fraud Professional Accreditation Board.

The credentials of the CFPAB are second to none with representatives from the Department for Work and Pensions and Department of Health, Local Authorities, HM Revenue and Customs, HM Passport Office, CIPFA, the National Fraud Authority, ACPO, City of London Police and the University of Portsmouth as well as representatives from the private sector including Questgates.

There are now over 14 000 people in both the public and private sectors that have achieved the highly coveted Counter Fraud Specialist or Counter Fraud Technician award. That is 14 000 individuals with the expertise required to detect fraud.

It is absolutely right that our industry continues to apply new thinking where data and technology is concerned in the fight against fraud.

However we must not forget this is all about people. If we are to continue in our drive to tackle this important risk, we must continue to invest in our people by equipping them with the necessary skills and knowledge.
