How did your interest in this sport start?

When I was seven years old, my parents took me to watch a local triathlon race to see if I was interested, and after begging them to let me race that day – as I didn’t have any of the equipment required – they booked me in for the next one. I was instantly hooked and have been competing ever since.

How did you build up your skills?

Up until the age of about 11, training and racing was more of a fun, social activity than a serious sporting choice. From there, I moved to a more serious club based in the University of Essex until I was 16, and then progressed to the adult competitions.  In my first year of qualifying to compete for Great Britain, it became obvious that I needed a personal coach who could tailor my training to my schedule and competitions, rather than generic group sessions.

What is the experience like?

The fascinating thing about a triathlon is that no two races are ever the same. I have travelled to places I never would have thought to go if I wasn’t competing, but it is amazing to see different ways of life and culture.

What has the highlight been so far?

In February 2018, I underwent major shoulder surgery to fix an injury I had developed two years previously. I was told that I wouldn’t be able to compete that year. However, three long months, countless sessions of physio and a heap of determination later, I was back training and I went on to win the title of European Champion.

How has the experience changed you?

It’s hard to say how triathlons have changed me, as I don’t remember much before I started. However, I do know that the motivation I have for triathlons means I do not give up easily on anything in life.

What’s your next challenge?

I have the World Triathlon Championships in Switzerland coming up in a few months, so I’m currently training for that. I am also aiming to complete my first Ironman 70.3 – a continuous 1.2 mile swim, 56 mile bike ride and a 13.1 mile run.

Any crossover between this activity and your insurance day job?

The motivation and determination I have in all aspects of my life stems from my triathlons and the amount of training that goes into it. I am not a quitter. Therefore, everything I do in work I have to do to the best of my ability.
