I was intrigued by the front page photograph in last week's issue showing a few of the 150 guests attending the black tie dinner in London (Post Magazine, 4 December, p1).

Having attended many formal dinners over the years, I cannot recall ever seeing lighted candles on dinner tables.

Perhaps there is a vested interest in the newly-formed Claims Club not implementing basic risk management procedures as the change of one or more candles being knocked over and causing a fire or inflicting a burns injury is relatively high whenever a "toast" is proposed. Blackened toast is probably the least of the concerns.
