Penny Black's insurance week

Penny is no stranger to office high jinks, but even she was surprised to learn this week of the stunt pulled by one legal expenses insurer.

A few years back, DAS took the novelty Christmas card a step further than most, sending with the traditional season’s greetings a picture of its then flaxen-haired head of sales Lyndon Willshire posing with just a loincloth to cover his modesty. Although voted ‘card of the year’ by a number of industry chums, it reportedly ruffled feathers at one insurer, who returned the card with a note saying they could not, in good conscience, accept it.

The phrase ‘know your audience’ comes to mind.

Meanwhile, being elegant and refined, Penny is lady of the finer pursuits – the opera, art and fine wine – so one was naturally aghast when the ever‑energetic Hiscox UK and Ireland managing director Steve Langan revealed his rather rustic holiday plans. “Exploring is a huge thing for me,” he said. “In September, I am taking my son to Uzbekistan and Kyrgyzstan to do three weeks trekking rough and sleeping under the stars.” Not quite the same as Penny’s grand plans to spend a month lying on the beach. One is glad her invitation got lost in the post.
