Flock raids industry in flurry of exec hires

Insurance Post can reveal that commercial motor fleet insurtech Flock has completed a series of senior hires, taking top executives from multiple insurers, including Hiscox and Mulsanne.

Following its Series B funding round earlier this year, backed by Octopus Ventures and Commerz Ventures, Flock CEO Ed Leon Klinger, pictured left, told Insurance Post how the money, $38m (£30.5m), would be used to fund its next phase of growth. This includes the hiring of experienced executives.

Back in April, Klinger told Post: “Don’t underestimate how valuable it is to hire someone very experienced in the insurance sector, into your start-up.

“What is important is that those individuals must embrace a fast-moving and dynamic and innovative culture. If you find someone who can combine that fast-moving dynamism with that storied insurance experience, you can make magic happen.”

Incoming talent

Now, six months later, Flock has announced a flurry of senior hires.

Darren McCauley joins as chief underwriting officer, bringing extensive experience as a former CEO at Mulsanne Insurance Company and previous CUO roles at Chubb and Tesco Underwriting.

Also joining the underwriting team with McCauley is Andrew Dodd, who has prior leadership roles at First, ERS, and Mulsanne.

Klinger said: "These significant underwriting hires underscore our commitment to developing a robust and sustainable approach."

In July, Flock announced Christian Nielsen as its first-ever CFO, carrying a strong track record from his previous positions as CFO of Hiscox UK & Europe for six years and finance director at Barclaycard UK.

Finally, Helen Ogilvie completes the leadership team as chief people officer, having formerly led the People functions at UK fintech firms Imburse and Duco.

Nielsen said: "Flock is working on a mission very close to my heart—reinventing insurance to not just pay claims but to help customers avoid them in the first place. We use data to spot driving trends and actively intervene with our fleet customers, keeping their drivers safer. That helps our fleet customers save time, money, and potentially even lives”.

Helen Ogilvie added: "What sets Flock apart is our immense commitment to our mission - to make the world quantifiably safer. This makes us a compelling company for talented people who want to make a genuine impact on the world around them”.
