Aon’s head of UK terrorism Richard Sawyer passes away

Richard Sawyer

Richard ‘Dickie’ Sawyer, Aon’s UK head of terrorism, has died at age 47.

Sawyer spent 30 years in insurance, holding various roles for companies such as CNA Reinsurance and United Insurance Brokers.

He would later be appointed assistant vice president of political violence and terrorism risks at Marsh, where he spent just over two years before moving to Aon.

Sawyer passed away on 16 August while on holiday in Spain. He was approaching 11 years at Aon at the time of his passing.

Julia Dickson, Aon’s head of war and terrorism, wrote a tribute to Sawyer on LinkedIn.

She said Sawyer was a “valued director in the terrorism team within crisis management at Aon” and that his “ever-present smile” will be “sorely missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him”.

“Dickie was an exceptional individual – thoughtful, kind, and truly one of a kind,” she said on LinkedIn.

Sawyer leaves behind his partner Emma, son Daniel (who is an underwriting assistant at Ascot Group), as well as both parents, a brother, and a sister.

Tributes paid

Peers and colleagues in the industry commented on Dickson’s post, paying tribute to Sawyer, calling him “one of a kind”, “a gem of a human” and “a pleasure to work with”.

Biba young broker of the year, Ethan Godlieb at Aon, said: “What incredibly sad news, Dickie was such a lovely upbeat, cheery gent and a wonderful broker. Rest in peace.”

His son, Mann, thanked those paying tribute. He said: “My Dad was clearly highly regarded by a lot of people.”

Dickson invited those who knew Sawyer, and wishing to pay their respects, to attend his funeral, which will be held on 3 October at Southend Crematorium.

She said: “If you would like to attend, please contact Kelly Irvine (kelly.irvine@aon.co.uk) to inform Dickie’s family of the numbers.”
