Tackling under-insurance in the social housing sector
The next meeting of the All Party Parliamentary Group on Insurance & Financial Services will explore what can be done to combat the low take up of insurance cover among tenants who live in Housing Association properties.
With current take-up of schemes running at 10-12% there is a serious under-insurance problem in the social housing sector.
The meeting will hear about how insurance companies need to move away from their traditional underwriting mind-sets to offer products to this group that are appropriately priced, and provide adequate protection.
As well as fresh thinking on the part of insurance companies it will also need the regulator – the Financial Conduct Authority – to support new ways of getting basic insurance cover for tenants in place.
