Although there has been a few slight shifts here and there since Reinsurance Magazine's review of the Top Five last year, the main contenders are still at the top of the pile. Here Marc Jones sums up what, and why, it has been an eventful year for each of these giants

It's been a busy year for Swiss Re, which has leapfrogged over Munich Re to become the frontrunner for 2006's Top 50 following its acquisition of GE Insurance Solutions (GEIS) in October 2005
