We live in a disposable, transitory society - as evidenced everywhere from the fate of the England football manager and the last leader of the UK Independence Party to the fickleness of government policies. The long-term commitments we need for our economy and infrastructure don't appear to be available in a political environment where everyone has an eye on the next election.
