Insurers have long been used to proving their worth and providing their stakeholders with a healthy return on investment, but this week this particular spotlight turned on their regulators.

Figures released by the National Audit Office show the combined forecast cost of the Financial Conduct Authority and the Prudential Regulation Authority as £664m in 2013-14 – 24% higher than the cost
