13 December: To have and to hold on tightly
A marriage proposal is a daunting prospect, both from the point of view of the proposee and for the person being proposed to. It is one of those things one always hopes will be met with delight, but the reaction can never be predicted.
Mr Policyholder had been co-habiting with Mrs Policyholder for some time and, being the romantic soul he is, decided it was now or never.
He had gone to a lot of trouble and done all the right things to ensure the proposal went as smoothly as possible he wasn't prepared to take any chances.
He bought flowers, and picked up the ring, and planned to propose over a meal later in the week.
However, when he got home and saw Mrs Policyholder ironing his Y-fronts, he realised what a lucky man he was, and overcome with excitement, he dropped to one knee in the lounge and asked his beloved to marry him.
Her response? She was so shocked she promptly dropped the iron - luckily not on him, but on the carpet, resulting in a claim that probably cost more than the ring.
