Postscript - 10 years ago: Rule book gets cautious welcome
Looking through Post's back catalogue paints a unique picture of more than 150 years of insurance news, as this highlight from 10 years ago reveals.
The General Insurance Standards Council's rule book, which is published this week, has received a cautious welcome from most sectors of the industry.
Simon Bolam, chairman of the British Insurance Brokers' Association, said it was "a considerable way forward", but still stressed two areas of concern: training and financial requirements.
"We don't think training and competence has been fully covered," he said, voicing fears that compliance training will need a visit every four years, generating "enormous cost". Insurers were also supportive.
"I think the timetable that's been set out and the balanced approach that [CEO] Chris Woodburn has taken is one we support," said Andy Homer, chief executive of Axa Provincial.
He added Axa would be encouraging its intermediaries to join when the GISC starts accepting members on 3 July. A Royal & Sun Alliance spokesman said although the rulebook contained no surprises, the company gave it a cautious thumbs up on first sight.
