Aviva's UK and Ireland general insurance CEO Maurice Tulloch has been named as a non-executive director at Pool Re.

The Pool Re scheme was set up in 1993 by the insurance industry in cooperation with the UK government in the wake of the IRA bombing campaign on the UK mainland.

The mutual reinsurer, whose members comprise the vast majority of insurers and Lloyd's syndicates offering commercial property insurance in the UK, ensures the market can provide cover for losses resulting from acts of terrorism, regardless of the scale of the claims.

Tulloch, who was CEO of Aviva Canada before moving to the UK role, is also a member of the Association of British Insurers board and chair of the general insurance council.

Anthony Latham, chairman of Pool Re said: "I am delighted to welcome Maurice to our board. Ensuring that Pool Re remains relevant and reflective of the needs of the UK terrorism insurance market is essential if it is to continue to fulfil its systemic function and underpin the UK terrorism insurance market.

"As Pool Re continues to evolve, using the latest developments in analytical technology and refining its proposition to the benefit of the UK insurance industry as a whole, we require the input and insight of leaders from across the industry with the experience and expertise to ensure that Pool Re remains the leading example of an industry led solution to terrorism reinsurance. Maurice epitomises these qualities and his strategic counsel will be an invaluable asset to our board".
