Despite being a woman of traditional tastes, Penny is aware the threat of cyber-attacks is very real, as reflected in the ominous words of various speakers at an event in London on the subject.

There were solemn warnings as a procession of presenters told the audience of the imminent danger of an attack from anyone ranging from anti-capitalists, religious fanatics, plain old-fashioned thieves and even disgruntled workers looking for revenge of some sort. Scary stuff indeed. Luckily the mood was lightened in the queue for the lunchtime sandwiches, when Penny overheard details of one of the latest online attacks. Hackers had somehow mistaken a Bristol bus company’s website for a company that organised travel across the Western world. Visitors to the site, instead of getting the details of a bus journey from Bristol to Avonmouth, were greeted with an IS-style black flag and warnings about what this particular group was planning. If the typical cyber-attackers are all that inept, maybe we are not doomed after all…
