Penny Black’s Insurance Week - 12 February

Penny has experienced her fair share of ungrateful dinner guests and so it was with sympathy that she regarded the situation of broking powerhouse Willis last week.

Having provided its impressive auditorium as the venue for Airmic’s Fast Track event for young risk leaders, it found itself being castigated by Arthur J Gallagher’s David Ross over its design flaws. The AJG International CEO took great pleasure in pointing out that while his broking rivals had built an amphitheatre fit for a king they had neglected to include the simple addition of a wall-mounted clock, and proceeded to break his talk intermittently to brandish the large clock face given to speakers to ensure they were keeping to time. If that were not enough, RSA CEO Stephen Hester later used his keynote speech to describe the presence of brokers in the general insurance market as “curious” and “old-fashioned”, and express disappointment at their role in the insurance value chain. One suspects the pair may not be invited back in a hurry.
