My Best XI: Alastair Denness, Swinton Commercial
Alastair Denness, national business development manager at Swinton Commercial, selects his best XI for an insurance industry start-up. Denness opts for a robust line-up including a trio of Zurich high flyers alongside big-game experience from elsewhere in the market. However, like so many managers before him, the boss may yet have to fend off accusations of nepotism following his central midfield selection.
1. Tony Harris (Tony Harris Management Consultants) (GK)
He played in goal for Leeds United seconds during the club’s 1970s heyday. A great mentor for younger members of the team
2. Paul Williams (Towergate) (RB)
Great energy up and down the right flank and a charmer off the ball, he would have the referee eating out of his hand
3. Darren Pacey (Zurich) (LB)
Scored a hat-trick on his 40th birthday at Bradford’s Valley Parade [Denness also points out he also nearly scored a hat-trick but ended up with no goals]
4. Simon Cooter (Covea) (CM)
Calm and collected, Cooter relishes the challenge of being a major force in the SME league
5. Bob Peterson (This London Market) (CB)
A beautiful reader of the game who would allow nothing to get past him
6. Matt Schofield (Zurich) (CB)
His connections to the rich and famous would guarantee some
much-needed glamour among the fan base
7. Steve Green (Zurich) (RM)
It may be a long shot, but the hope is that this Barnsley fan could bring some European best practice tactics to the team
8. Archie Denness (CM) A
North Somerset under-12s midfield goal-scoring machine who, in the park, has popped a number of goals past Leeds United’s 1970s
second-team keeper
9. Carolyn Callan (Swinton) (ST)
Leading the attack to get Swinton to the top of the league in the SME marketplace
10. Matthew Reed (Axa) (ST)
Would bring a sparkle of Torquay United’s English Riviera magic to the team
11. Bob Screen (DAS) (LM)
Screen’s strategic thinking, competition analysis and creativity will have the opposition’s coach terrified
