Aviva shares in freefall after monster loss

Aviva shares lost more than a quarter of their value in the first three hours of trading on the London Stock Exchange after the insurer reported a net loss for 2008 of £885m.

At 4.08pm, Aviva shares were off more than 33%, or 94.70, at 190.30.

A lot of the loss was due to the drop in value of its corporate bond portfolio, which dropped by 8%- forcing it to make "prudent
