Penny Black’s Insurance Week - 20 November

Penny is used to her fair share of moonshine, but even she takes her hat off to the brave London-based staff at loss adjuster McLarens.

The claims bods have set up Minories pub The Peacock as their local, and report the landlord offering a prize to those who can identify the ingredients in his homebrew, charmingly branded ‘diesel’. Testers quizzed by Penny describe the drink as resembling Jägermeister, ‘but worse’. Penny will stick to her gin and tonic, thanks. Despite being a jet-setting woman of the world, Penny is lacking in the non-English linguistic department, a shortcoming exposed during a trip to Madrid, where the Spanish insurance market gave its take on international distribution challenges. Although headsets were provided, not everything was translated into English. That is not to criticise the translators, who had their work cut out – not least when Rastreator CEO Elena Betés crammed a 30-minute presentation into 12 minutes. Going over notes, one of the few comprehensible sentences involved English customers being obsessed with price and German consumers being more preoccupied with cabbage. While sauerkraut is indeed popular in Germany, on closer inspection the word in question turned out to be ‘coverage’.
