The legal and political landscapes across the United Kingdom and Republic of Ireland vary considerably and no less so when it comes to the personal injury discount rate. With negative (and different) discount rates and methodologies adopted in both England and Wales, and in Scotland, further evidence of divergence on the rate across the UK is also seen in Northern Ireland. However, Deborah Newberry, head of corporate and public affairs at global law firm Kennedys, asks might a recently launched consultation in Northern Ireland bring closer alignment?

The Republic of Ireland, adopting its own bespoke system, is also embarking on its own discount rate consultation.
